We stayed at the Navy Lodge on our last visit (June) and did enjoy it, but we thought the Motel 6 would be more affordable.

Be sure to check out Navy Lodge, not far from Base and really nice folks there.

I made the trip up from NC, all I can tell you is the ceremony might have been brief but the room was filled with pride and accomplishment. Not as formal as PIR, but they would pause so families could take pictures. The guys also like taking photo ops with their ship mates. Across the street from the main gate is the Nautilus, first nuke sub as well as the Submarine museum, pretty cool. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

My called last night and said he will graduate Sub school next month. He said he will be assigned to the USS Alexandria and stay in Groton. I have heard the Graduation ceremony is brief and might not justify the trip (we live in Texas), any comments would be appreciated.

Just returned last night from a weekend in Groton. My son Graduated Friday from BESS. It was a another proud moment for me not only seeing my son graduate but all the other young Sailors that graduated with him walk across the stage. Nice little ceremony they had and a bit more laid back then PIR, I know they all enjoyed it. After everything was over, most even stayed for photos, even if their families weren't there, they took shots with their ship mates. its been some ride, but well worth it, and I see my boy shaping into a man. His choice was a good, no great one.

Hi Dads,

My son completed his A-school Sept. 3,2010. He is now awaiting his boat to come back in USS Alexandria. He was able to spend a couple of weeks with us prior to returning to his home base of Groton (his first choice). We are really proud of him. He had a surprise duty last week. He was assigned to be a driver for Vice Admiral Donnelly. He had nothing but good things to say about the admiral and his aid. They really encouraged him to do well. The Navy has been the best thing our son could do with his career. Good luck to your sons and God Bless. Moving on to the group.

Hi Randy,

Take a look at the OPSEC link. In general you will decidedly *not* be told when a sub is to begin a cruise. The enemy would like nothing better than to know when to sit off the tip of Long Island to follow a sub.

Also, keep in mind that his assignment to his command and the deployment of the sub have nothing to do with each other.

My son is at Groton finishing his 'A' school. He is scheduled to graduate Sept. 2. It is our understanding that this ceremony is nothing more than a salute and a handshake. Does any one know how long of a break they get after this? He has been told of his assigned base will be Groton (his first choice). We are considering going to watch him ship out for his first deployment, will he be told when they ship out in advance? I have never seen a Navy ship leave port and on the military channel it looks really spectacular to watch a sub move out. Looking forward to any info. Thanks!

Randy L.
