Hello Everyone, Happy New Year.
It's nice to see some activity here, it's been awhile since I posted anything on this group, our son was able to come home from Groton over christmas, it was great to have him home for the week, he's graduated BESS in early Dec and is almost done with Basic Mechanical and he says he will start AT&T soon, whatever that is and then he goes down to KB for awhile.
Still he had a great time here with us and visiting his friends, it was hard to let him go and he says he misses us has much has we miss him but we call and web cam often and now that hes back in class he has less time to miss us.
Everyone take care and thank your sons and daughters for their service and have a great new year.

Michael flew back to KB last night. Hopefully his C school will start in early Feb. It was good to have him home for the holidays, and it was tough to say goodbye at the airport last night.

Happy New year to everyone! Let's hope 2010 is better than 2009!

Hi Sub Dads,

We had our first visit of our son who is in sub school at Groton, CT. Dave arrived on Dec 28th and returned to Groton on Jan 3rd. It was our first chance to spend any time with him since he left for basic @ GL- August 26th. He was a 'Grad-n-Go' so we only saw him for 45min at the base and 3 hrs at O'Hare. We definitely saw changes with our son (all good). He was more confident and proud of his accomplishments (and so are we).
Dave was very anxious to be home, we even brought a couple of his hometown buddies with us to pick him up at BWI. He wore his uniform, which looked great. He got to see all his friends during the week, but we really enjoyed when his buddy from the Air Force Acad. stopped by. It was fun listening to the two of them comparing notes about their service. We received lessons on how to fold tee-shirts and pants, gas mask training, and the best was learning how to eat while seating at attention (AF).
One of the most important things we noticed was he is very happy to be a member of the Submarine community. He likes the guys he rooms and hangs with. He likes his location in CT, which is good since he will be there until Aug. '10. He is scheduled to complete BESS in Jan, then stay for A-school for ET Nav. Dave still seems very happy with this choice.
I hope all of you had the opportunity to see your sailor over the holidays. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

God Bless all those who have chosen to serve and their families!

Please extend my birthday wishes to your son, ct. I hope he is with friends. Birthdays can be lonely times when you are away from home.

Hope your Thanksgiving is blessed with family and friends!

Hey Randy, I enjoy these hypothetical debates, I hope you do too.

Let's see, submarine stability would be determined by the CG being over the base of the triangle defined by...hmmm??? I(z)(moment of inertia along the long axis) * -Sine( [CG(x)-CB(x)] ) and the tipping force would be the Cosine times the differences in (y)?

That's why if CG = CB the vessel might twist in the water like a corkscrew.

I was just trying to interpolate on the turning behavior of ship (listing outside the turn) vs boat (listing inside the turn) and what you'd call the hypothetical vessel that didn't list at all during a turn? Like puck on an air-hockey table or a hovercraft? Even that's not perfect, but I think I've allowed my questions do deteriorate into the perfectly silly. :^)

Thanks for the chit-chat, things will get better next week. The first few days after saying bon-voyage are the toughest.

ct,

Because of the dynamics of the stability of a vessel, perfect vertical would be impossible. During a turn, inertia will affect either the top or bottom in which a righting arm will develop. Every ship has 2 points of rotation. center of gravity and center of bouyancy. Their relationship to one another will affect the leaning and turning. Also, on a submarine, when diving, these 2 actually pass each other on the vertical axis at which time the vessel is the least stable. This is why a sub will never surface during very high seas.

Wow, haven't had to use that knowledge in awhile, had to remove the cobwebs, lol.

Hi Randy,

Turning & Leaning... that's a new one to me, I like it! :^) Thanks!
Naturally it causes one additional question... What if the vessel's axis were to remain perfectly vertical in a turn at any speed??? :^)

And I'm supposing that he gets the rating at his last week in Groton so he arrives in KB with the rating... There's a mix of subtlety and common sense in that.

Ok, I am going to answer the last question first. When a ship turns, it will list or lean to the outside of a turn. When a boat turns, it leans into the turn. This is only a rule of thumb. when it comes to submarines, the old fleet boats were smaller and definately called boats as they were smaller and would lean into the turn.

A schools are the basics of a rate. The fundamentals that can be applied to all aspects of the job and equipment. For an MT it will cover all systems and components that are involved in submarine missiles. C school is a very focused school on a specific piece of equipment or system. As far as the other guys getting their ships, it depends upon what was guaranteed them upon enlisting. Some will have gotten more than others. Your son did pretty good with the schools he will go to.

After A school, you now have the requisite knowledge to wear the rating badge of that rate, thus this is why he is now authorized to wear it.
