btw, Michael said he's "rated" and can now wear his MT insignia he kept referring to it as a "patch". He also said he'll be on hold again at KB. Last time he was on hold waiting for more classmates so his 1st week was spent very slowly filling out some forms...

I'm still a bit fuzzy on the whole A school, B school, C school, because apparently some of the guys he met at RTC are getting ship (boat?) assignments already.

Oh, one more kwestion[sic] What's the difference between a ship and a boat? I jokingly asked Mike to ask his Chief... he respectfully declined ;^) I know, I know, tradition is a large part of it. It's just one of those eternal questions that is designed to vex and perplex....

Hi John,

No, we won't be traveling, just my son. He surprised us, he came home last night on the train, but left a little while ago to get back to Groton.

Thanks,

---

Hey Randy,

I participate on a number of Ning boards, and I've found that splitting up interests into too many specialized groups tends to diminish the overall quality & quantity of posts. I'm actually glad there isn't a separate group.

Maybe we could suggest to Jim that he expand the 'charter' to read "The Silent Service -- From Sub School to Operational Deployment" -- or some such inclusive language.

Right above this under the "Discussion Forum" bar there could be topics for BESS, boomers, diesels, dsrv, experimental, fast attack, Georgia, Groton, Washington, etc...

As this is all new to me I appreciate reading posts from guys that have been around the block a few times.

Just my $0.02

I always try to answer my own questions a little before I ask in public. Then I can thank you for clarifying the finer points, and supplying info that I wasn't otherwise able to easily discover.

Thanks.

ctyankee,

KB is strictly a ballistic missile sub base. There are no other influences associated. In the big picture, it falls under Jacksonville administratively, however SubLant in Va is the governing command operationally.
KB used to have a sub tender, but no longer. I was on the decommissioning crew in 94.
If I may make a suggestion for a group. How about an SS or submarine group. It is a small enough community, that you will have people from all the sub bases and with the exception of Va, the other sub bases are just subs. Even in Va, part of the base is designated as a sub base.

I live in Jax and still make it up to KB every once in a while. Having spent 4 years there, it still holds a special place in my heart. So should you have any other questions, I will be more than happy to answer them.

Hello Yankee,

my son will graduate Groton mid Dec., and he says the odds are he may get stationed where Boomers are, more than Fast Attacks. ( it has to do with his rate. he still could get Guam, though ...) he wants us to go to his Graduation, 'cause he might get shipped out directly afterwards, with no leave. B/t/w, if you are passing through Savannah, drop me a line. God's Speed.

With my son Michael's departure for Kings bat imminent, I was wondering if there is another group here for that base?

I began by asking myself these questions:

Is Kings bay 'only' a sub-base like Groton, making another online group a moot point? Or, is it a mixed fleet (sub & surface) base?

Then, rather than posting a question and hoping someone else would be willing to correct my ignorance, I did a little looking at the Kings Bay webpage.

1) I'm guessing that the Army aspect of the base is still closed/idle.

2) It appears that Jacksonville Fl is as much of an influence as any other municipality. Will that city ever stop sprawling? ;^)

3) The surface ships I saw in the press photo are sub-tenders.

OK that's enough for now, being 90 minutes away has been good, next week it'll be 15 hours. We'll see him around New Year's.

BTW: about the SPAMMER -- I never got the spam! Let that information go to whoever tried, that board SPAM is truly an ineffective to 'advertize'.

John,
Thanks for the offer. We did St. Augustine today. Had a great time. My son classes up tomorrow, so I'll be waiting for him to finish class in the afternoon.

Greetings Carl J,

Glad you made that long trek safely. If you want, i can show Savannah if you have time Tues. I am a tour guide, and can get you and your son and wife or whoever a tour Gratis. Wow, your son is "That Close" to getting underway on a nuclear sub. Tell him Congratulations, will you? Let me know if you want to see Savannah, though St. Augustine may be just as close for you.
