Hello All. Just arrived at Kings Bay today from driving my sons car from Washington State. A long drive of 6 days. It's so cool to get to see him. I spend a few days here before flying back on Wednesday. He is set to start his MT - C school on Tuesday. Slight possiblilty that he may get changed to November, which would be another month wait for him. This base is very nice, Had a great tour of what he could show me. He too is a boomer and will be stationed at Bangor or here at Kings Bay. He's hoping for Bangor as it is only 2 hours from our house. I'[ll update later . Carl

Thanks for your response, we are hoping he at least gets the west coast, I have been to the base at Brementon but that was a long time ago but iI know it very nice up there, spent most of my time based in San Diego and the only sub time I got was check ing out their fuel system to on load fuel while working for Fuel Services at 32nd st.
We are in touch with our sailor on a daily basis and we will just have to get used to him being stationed else where, any chance he may pull shore duty here when his rotation come around ?
Thanks again
Greg

Greg,

Yes as to his destiny concerning his choice of bases. MT's are only on boomers, the only US boomers are Tridents, and there are only 2 Trident bases. Probably the only rate that would apply. All the other rates can go either fast attack or boomer, but MT's - Boomers. I am really sorry to have to tell you that.

Yes, San Diego is all fast boats. That was my first home port. Bangor, Wa is the only west coast base for him and it really is a great base and locall. I was stationed there for 5 years and loved every minute of it.

Good luck to your young men and Go Navy!

I read your post about Paul's son going to Kings Bay Ga or Bangor Wa, my son will be going thru MT training as well, are Kings Bay and Bangor the only two places he is destined to be stationed at ?
We are from San Diego and we have a sub base out here but no Boomers, whats the likelyhood that he will be stationed here or even the west coast?
Do they station MT's on fast attacks or just the big boys, I'm an old surface fleet sailor myself so I dont know too much about the subs.

Hi Paul,

Michael's BESS graduation was the same week as a command change was going on at the base, even so he said there wasn't much to it. He didn't know about the other thing, I have a feeling it's more of a 'theoretical' milestone -- like finishing a semester...

For us the big event was when he *arrived* in Groton following RTC. Even though he was still white card, we were able to spend some time in the area near the base.

Hey Randy, yes only son, he and his sister are twins, (both 18, both going on 30) she's attending Lyme Academy just a few miles away -- (they're too busy to really notice the proximity) and they're our only kids. We went from a house-full (including friends coming & going) to zero almost overnight. Now we're empty-nesters looking to downsize.

Paul,
Not sure what it is like now, but in years past, it has not been anything of ceremony. Should anyone know better than I, pls advise. It is very beautiful country and there are some cool things to see. I lived there for a couple of years (new construction SSBN 727). A lot of submarine history including the Nautilus that you can tour. Good Luck.

ctyankee,

Thanks, I loved the quote and DEFINATELY Support the FairTax!

Missile Tech, yea he is pretty much destined to the Trident boats. So for operational command type orders, it will be Kings Bay, Ga or Bangor , Wa. I was in that loop early in my career. Is he your only son? Our youngest, Nick is in week 6 at RTC. The first couple weeks were rough on me. He worked for me for a couple of years before he made the committment. So I seen him every day. Miss him a lot. Gotta go.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Hey Randy,

Thanks, I will.

He's got ~3 more weeks of "ATT(?)" training then he's off to GA to get his "MT" schooling. He doesn't know if it'll be 6 months or two years, before he is in a boat... (maybe he does and is just giving me the widest range of dates that he's heard that some sailors spend in school).

His mom is already starting to miss him. You know he's only an hour away now, but once he's down in GA, we won't be able to see him on the weekends. Not complaining... We're lucky that we've been able to see him as often as we have since boot.

P.S. -- I miss-typed my last reply, I meant to address you, and when I re-read it I hope I didn't offend Jim... I doubt it. I'm usually not so careless in the boards. Sometimes it's hard to convey humor without sounding sarcastic, especially when mistakes are in the content of the posts.

Good morning all.
Spoke to my son yesterday and he spent most of the day with his friends from his boot camp div learning where everything was, they went to a local shopping mall to pick up some items, then spent time finding things on base like the NEX and chow hall, he sounds good and says things are much more laid back than boot camp (go figure) and he is glad he has some friends from his boot camp div to hang with, says it takes his mind off of missing his family, all in all he sounds good and ready for BESS and his rate training to begin, I will advise him to stay the straight and narrow and to keep his eyes open and mouth shut and we will see how this turns out.
Thanks for the advice and will chat with you all later.

ctyankee,

Can you give my best to your son Michael for completing subschool. It sounds as though he will be stationed in Kings Bay, Ga. Excellent base. I was stationed there for 4 years and had a great time. I know that his next year will be filled with a continuous stream of learning. He will have his watchstation quals, underway quals, inport quals, basic sub quals. Not an easy task for just anybody. He will be faced with many mental challenges, which I am sure he will face without fear or reservation. Life onboard the boats is all about the team, trust, comrauderie, respect, and honesty. These are the principles that make the silent service such a close brotherhood and I am sure that what your son has learned in the Navy to date, will serve him well to excell on the boats.

God Bless,
Randy
