Hey Jim,

That's interesting and funny. Do they teach silhouette recognition to *all* the submariners, or just the ones with windows in their racks? ;^)

Enjoy the rest of your Columbus Day weekend!

Jim,

Anyway we could replace the picture for this group with something on the line of a United States Submarine? Please? When I was making spec ops, we were hunting these guys. You can find some pretty cool pictures of the Sea Wolf class.

To Greg Yee,

I second the comment about foolish behavior. When my son went through BESS, his class had about a 40% completion rate. The rest were discharged for disiplinary reasons, or couldn't hack the studies. Of these two, the most common was discipline. Underage drinking got most of those, and that usually led to some antics off base that were not tolerated.

Greetings Greg Yee,

Congratulations to your son! My son is near completion of his 10 month training there at Groton. Depending on his Rate, and therefore classes, your son will have time to visit Boston, Newport, Mystic, etc. New York City, too.

Tell your son to continue to keep his "mouth shut, and his ears and eyes open!" . The word on the street is that recruiters are not signing up recruits as much as they did in the past, and my son says foolish behavior that used to get a sailor disciplined and extra duty, they now are showing guys the door. He told me some stories of some very foolish behavior, and now the barracks have fewer sailors in training.

I know this aint much, but be encouraged. My son is doing well, thank God.

Yours, john

Hello All
My son just reported to Groton yesterday, wanted to join and get advice as time goes by.

John as for your sons comment about what he is learning, a great amount of these rates involve TOP SECRET material that is not to be shared with anyone
for any reason. these shcools are academicly demanding and the students must be very focused, but they are rewarded with fast advancement.

John in Georgia, My son John may be an E2 at this point but the last I spoke to him he was an E1. He graduated BT end of August and went right to Groton. He is currently involved in BESS and from there moves onto ST, sonar tech. Not his first choice but he says he is happy none the less. So I guess when I throw out terms I better get them correct. I am still new at this, that's why I'm here. He still takes everything very seriously, perhaps my concern is the fact the free time he has is spent doing very much the same things he did before he joined. And please don't get me wrong, he is a great young man and can play as hard as he wants and remain focused to the task at hand. I'm more concerned with him not loosing the edge, the competitive edge I feel it takes to move through the ranks.

Greetings ctyankee, (b/t/w, my wife is a Connecticut Yankee ...)

I appreciate your comment about the competition. My son seems to be under SOME pressure, sometimes, but not enough, if you ask me. I ask him about his classes, and he says he'd have to kill me if he told me about what he is learning .... Do you mind sharing your son's Rate? You say he will end his A school near the end of this month, and he started around mid- September, no? My son's A school ends around Xmas, "radaioman", for lack of a better term. Oh, well, thanks for your postings, and if he wants a tour of Savannah, being so close to Kings Bay, tell him i can give him one Gratis.
yours, john in georgia.

Hmmm, I don't know if I'd call it competition. Michael says it's about keeping your wits about you, your ears open and your mind ready to the possibilities as they present themselves. It's been said that "Chance favors the prepared mind." and based on my son's observations I'd tend to agree.

He says he's got 28 more days to complete the rest of his training in Groton, then he'll be off to GA. Looks like Halloween is going to be the last holiday we have him at home for quite a while.
