Well I have to say, from what my son says Groton is much more laid back. Seems like it's class, watch or duty and a heavy dose of video games. Do they keep the edge they had coming out of BC. I remember reading an article posted here where a Master Cheif was very impressed with caliber of sailor coming out of BC only to wonder what happens in between. Is this what happens in between. Can someone comment on the level of discipline maintained at the base, just curious if some could comment. I'll keep the edge on the home front if needed, seems as though there should be a great deal of competition amongst the sailors.

Surprise surprize!

Michael graduates BESS this Friday. We're trying to figure out what this means in terms of the big picture???

He came home this weekend but not for the whole long weekend as he has duty today and his next few weekends too...

Well both my wife and I have talked to our son today. He arrived in Groton today and so far likes what he sees. Has two roommates already and one of the has a computer and xbox 360, he's in heaven. To borrow a quote from a movie " I think I can hang out with you fellas for a while". Says he will be there for at least a year. Does that sound about right? He says there are three subs near by and just loves that, going to get a tour this weekend. He even posted a note on his myspace page, guess all is good in his outlook right now. :)>

Good news everyone! (sorry for the Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth voice)

Looks like my son will be attending another technical school in Groton following his completion of BESS, before heading to GA in early December.

Alright, great news! I spoke wih my son today, he called from D.C. while transfering flights on his way to Providence RI. From there he travels a short drive to Groton. He sounds great and is glad to be moving on. He said his Petty Officers were all very supportive and wished him the best. I asked him about what he was going to be doing and he gave me three things, ET, ST and FT. electronics, sonar and fire techs. He also stated the position also could mean if he does well his ranking could be accelerated by 18 months or so. He stated these posistions are some of he toughest in the Navy. Not sure how spot on he is about that, but none the less he sounds very motivated and ready for the next step. I am absolutely jazzed to have this forum to share this moment with, this is so great. Today was also the first time I didn't feel like crying after geting off the phone with him....I am so proud.

Paul,

My son arrived at Groton and began BESS in February. He has completed that and a basic electronics class. After labor-day he starts his "A" School for ET, electronics tech. Sounds similar to what your son will be doing. I am learning about these terms and specific designations as well. (Read the question I had about "Radioman" and the great response !) My son says my advice to him that I learned from my WWII and Korean War Vet uncles has proven true, time and again - " Keep your mouth shut, and your ears and eyes open!" Maybe he can bump into my son there and they can talk. Go to Boston with other sailors, etc.. I don't know how to contact you directly, but my son is very helpful and is doing very well there. He got taken off "Advanced Cleaning Unit" duty, and is now the personal go-fer to the Senior Chief there !! I am so proud of him. Hope this helps.

Hello Everyone, well my son John graduated from Great Lakes this past Friday and is heading off to Groton tomorrow. Can you dads wih experience give me the highlights of what he is in store for next. He has told us he is going to be working with computers and communications but I don't think he really knows yet. Does that make sense? Anyway any information about Groton and what he is going to be experiencing next would be great.

Attention on Deck : My son was misinformed = "Hurry up and Wait !!!" His ET class does not start until Soon after Labor Day. Oh, well. Thank you Kenorian, again, for keeping us all posted.

Sincerely, John

Dear Kenorian,

Thank you so much for this answer. It is the best one I have received, clearing up the difference between Radio and ET as such.

My son starts his A School this morning - then, around Christmas, it's off to a Boat somewhere in the world . Hope your son is doing well in Hawaii. Thanks again.

John, re. Sub ET rate: Subsurface: Navigation and Radio
Subsurface ETs are divided into two distinct job functions, Navigation and Radio. Subsurface Navigation ETs are responsible for maintaining, operating, and administrating the submarine's navigation and radar equipment, systems and programs. Subsurface Radio ETs are responsible for maintaining, operating, and administrating the submarine's radio communication equipment, systems and programs, including submarine LAN systems.

All sub sailors need a Secret clearance, he'll probably need a Top Secret clearance.
