Geoffrey, My son will also be deploying on his first curse when the Abraham Lincoln departs later this year, well he's there now but my understanding is this is kind of a warm up dress rehearsal kind of thing.
Ric, Ed or anyone,
The letters and packages from home sound like a great idea. Does anyone know if he will have a new address or do we send stuff to his current address and it will be forwarded?
Ric and Ed, Thanks so much for the input! All great advice and with Christmas coming, some good ideas for gifts :-) This is a great site and I especially enjoy the publication from the Abraham Lincoln. V/R, Geoff
Shower flip-flops -- true -- my daughter bought herself a pair of sequined purple flip-flops somewhere -- so nobody else would mistake them for their own. LOL.
As for electronics -- something with storage for tunes or videos or whatever -- maybe a Kindle or Nook -- because connectivity is the big problem on deployment. Having a private device they can listen and fall asleep to in their rack might help.
For connectivity there's only ships email most of the time which can stopped any time no cell no 4G. They will be out in the great big ocean. Port calls are short and may have incompatible networks.
She loves it.
And the crew are mostly too busy to send an email more than one-twice a week. If it is online or not for "operational reasons" e-mail may be there or not. But it is the best bet.
The best of all is mail from home and non parishable goodies he can share with his buddies.
You got it so right. And e-mail when you can.
Kind of like boot camp, but less predictable when they deploy. And more freedom. In a small space
(lord when I think of the submariners that seems so silly thing to say)
try sleeping in a NAVY rack for a week -- can't sit up -- climbing in is an easily mastered skill for a young athletic person.
Thinking of possible tiger sometime.
How our kids do it I don't know - but most of them do it and like it.
Take care
Ric
Geoffrey, glad to hear Karl is on board with a great ship and amoung the best sailors. While space is vety limited on board, he would benefit for a good headphone set, and thin high quality laptop with extra memory and a good pair of flip flops for the shower (a must). The ship has a good store but a few extra dollars to his bank account will make it better. The best of all is mail from home and non parishable goodies he can share with his buddies.

Hey Paul thanks for another great Boat Show vid! I tried the Cillini winnie for breakfast and its a hit.
Eddie
Greetings to the familes and friends of CVN-72! We found out recently that Karl's squadron will deploy with the Abraham Lincoln later this year. It's his first cruise. Any thoughts on items to make the cruise more comfortable would be welcome. Best, Geoff
Neal and Cellini are back with some new faces !!
The Vinson and Lincoln are engaged in work-up exercises (see Penny Press) prepraring for deployment later this year. The others are on location defined by the fleet number (5th Fleet Area of Responsibility, 7th Fleet AOR,...). I learned all of this from my son's deployment last year. My son is with the Lincoln group and my nephew is on the Vinson.
