Thanks for the info Paul. Given that the Pacific is a pretty big place, it makes sense that there is enough room.
yes....current status of the carriers is
Ships Underway Carriers: USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) - Pacific Ocean USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) - Pacific Ocean USS George Washington (CVN 73) - 7th Fleet USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) - 5th Fleet USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) - 5th Fleet
It was interesting seeing the photo of the day. It indicated that the Carl Vinson was off the coast of So. Cal. doing qualifications. I thought they were still deployed. Is there typically more than one group at a time doing these??
Thanks for the information Dave and Tim. My son called from the ship yesterday before they where under way. He sounded excited and said like his squadron (VFA-34) mates were taking care of him.
I think it will be an interesting experience for the new guys especially. My son spoke to me prior to leaving and was way more comfortable this time as it's his second go at it. He knows what's where and how to get to it. The first deploy was a hunt and peck for him, like the first timers will be this cruise. It's good they have this 3-4 week run to become familiar with the surroundings. Good luck and safe trip for all of them.
Tim, This "cruise" is a pre-deployment exercise that the Lincoln and accompanying ships do to get the crews ready for the real thing. My
son and his squadron (HSM-77) went out last year (Sept 2010) on the Lincoln. This year, my son is on the USS Momson, DDG-92, a destroyer that is part of the Lincoln group. They'll be out for 3-4 weeks, then return to San Diego. Some may go out again prior to the actual deployment in early December. The squadrons pretty much take all of the equipment and load on board their respective ships....where it will stay until they return in mid 2012. The crew may have some time off between Oct. and Dec., but they are pretty much attached to the ships until the deployment is over. It will be an intersting experience for all involved. TIM
My son and his squadron are headed to the ship today. Sounds like they will be there 3 weeks doing whatever they do to get ready for an upcoming cruse. This is his first time on an aircraft carrier and is very excited.
