My sailor, Garrett is a rescue swimmer AW assigned to the Shiloh as part of Detachment Alpha from the HS-14 Squadron.  He is one of 4 that went abaord when she left port a few weeks ago.  I just spoke with him via Skype last night as they flew off and landed in Misawa to make room in the hanger for a couple of days.  He expects to be back on board soon.  He feels that the mission is winding down based on what little they have been allowed to do recently, as the Japanese military have taken over the delivery of supplies.  I see the picture above shows a helo landing recently, maybe that was my son on it!  I hope all of your sailors are doing well.  God speed!

The Shiloh is putting out soon, that made me feel better knowing that they are going to be mobile. The radiation is a concern to me as well but I also believe that there is a great deal of media hype concerning the issue. The sailors were told that the level detected at Yokosuka was equivalent to a day on the beach and advised to limit their outdoor time. Cameron is on the base football team and their practices have been put on hold for a while. I think your son will enjoy the ship, they run on their own most of the time and have been all over the far east.

Glad to hear it, Cameron thinks he may know him. He has really enjoyed Japan and I agree that once they get through boot camp and "A" school things get better. It becomes a job rather than high school all over again.

Hey Ed, Jason is doing great.  I remember when he was in boot camp the ladies on N4M's kept saying things would get better.  They were right.  Things got better in "A" school, and although life onboard ship certainly takes some getting used to, he's doing well.

USS Shiloh Concludes Keen Sword 2011

By Lt. j.g. Nelson Balido, USS Shiloh Public Affairs
Posted: December 10, 2010

SEA OF JAPAN – The guided-missile cruiser USS Shiloh (CG 67), guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62), the Japanese destroyers JS Kurama (DDH 144) and JS Myoko (DDG 175) ended the exercise Keen Sword 2011 in style with a diamond formation photograph exercise Dec. 10.

Afterwards Shiloh bided farewell to their Japanese counterparts and sailed off into the open sea alongside the Fitzgerald concluding seven-day of non-stop drill exercise.

“We are proud to have had an opportunity to work with JMSDF on this exercise, said Captain Matthew E. Loughlin, Shiloh’s commanding officer. “Ballistic Missile Defense is crucial to the defense of Japan and exercises such as these prove the true friendship, combined capacity, and increasing inoperability between the United States Navy and the Japanese. Maritime Self Defense Force.”

Keen Sword 2011 is designed to strengthen Japan Self Defense Forces and U.S. military interoperability. Tenth in a series of joint bilateral exercises since 1986, the exercise included participation by units from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps coordinating training with their Japan Self Defense Force counterparts at military installations throughout mainland Japan, Okinawa and in the waters surrounding Japan.

Shiloh conducted ballistic missile defense and surface warfare readiness training, communications and data link drills and subject matter expert exchanges during the course of the seven-day exercise.

Shiloh is assigned to Commander Task Force 70 and is forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.
