Being There Matters: Navy Leader Brings America's Navy Home to Bakersfield...
Story Number: NNS130614-11Release Date: 6/14/2013 1:03:00 PM
By By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Jesse Dick, Navy Office of Community Outreach
Bakersfield, Calif (NNS) -- Americans here have a better understanding of the Navy and its role in preserving the nation's security and prosperity following two days of high-level engagements between Navy and key area leaders June 11-12.
Rear Adm. Gregory Horn, Deputy Chief of Chaplains for Reserve Matters and Director of Religious Programs, Marine Forces Reserve, spent two days in uniform in his home town, meeting with government officials and corporate executives, presenting to civic groups and talking with members of the media.
Horn, a Navy Reserve Flag Officer and an ordained Presbyterian Church minister, has been pastor and head of staff at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Bakersfield since 1986.
His itinerary included a meeting with Bakersfield Mayor Harvey Hall, a presentation to the Bakersfield Rotary Club, appearances on 97.7FM KNZR radio and FOX's KBFX "Eyewitness News" and a tour of the Occidental Elk Hills oil and gas exploration facility north of the city. Horn also threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Bakersfield Blaze baseball game.
"This was an opportunity of a lifetime to represent and speak about the Navy that I'm so proud to be a part of in my hometown," Horn said.
Executive outreach -- engagements between senior Navy leaders and their government, civic, education and corporate counterparts -- has become a focus of effort in recent years, as the Navy works to increase understanding of the Navy's mission and role in America's national security strategy. The effort is particularly critical in areas of the country which do not enjoy a significant everyday Navy presence.
"Research has shown that Americans are losing touch with the military services in general, as those who serve make up an ever decreasing percentage of the population," said Cmdr. Kim Marks, Director of the Navy Office of Community Outreach, which oversees the Navy's Executive Outreach program. "Unlike the other services, which enjoy a physical presence across the country in the form of installations and Guard units, the Navy's primary fleet concentration areas are on both coasts. And that is why outreach programs that bring our Sailors and our equipment to Americans living in cities far from the ocean are so vital."
Navy dolphins discover rare old torpedo off Coronado...
Two trained dolphins surprise Navy specialists with their find: a Howell torpedo, state-of-the-art for its day in the late 19th century. It's only the second one known to exist. http://lat.ms/11dBKqS
Congrats John and to yuor son Too. I think there's going to be a few proud Dads this week!
Woot!! Congrats John and BZ to your son!
Congratulations Gary and Scott. I received good news as well. My son is now FC-2. In his Group only 87 out of 533 advanced. Very proud of him. Sent an e-mail to his ship to congratulate him.
I got the call this morning from my son. When I tried to get on the results website, I got the server error > too many people trying to access the site LOL...
Thanks again Scott and yes I think I'm gonna be stoked all week :P
Thanks Gary, I saw the Quota sheet the other day and talked to my son last night. He told me it would be a few more days for the results to come out. Needless to say I saw it this morning and was stoked!
BZ to your son as well Scott!
I was so worried that he may not advance for this cycle as I was worried with his grades when he was in high school hehe... But obviously the Navy changed all of that for the better! The quota for this cycle for my son's rate dropped significantly from the previous cycle 218, so out of 882 test passers they can only fill 228 across the board which equates to only a 25.85% chance of getting the promotion. Out of the 228 he was in the 99% overall percentile. Several months ago he did get an EP Eval which contributed to this success...
I posted this in the Navy Career Planning group earlier.
Here are the links for the quotas and you will find your son's name sorted by last name and rate in the advancement results below:
Cycle 219 - Quotas
Cycle 219 - Petty Officer (E4-E6) Advancement Results
Have a great week!
Gary
BZ to your son Gary! My son also advanced today, FT2!
