Travis AFB, NAVFAC Southwest Celebrate Newly Constructed Airfield...

Story Number: NNS130405-19Release Date: 4/5/2013 8:22:00 PM

By Mario T. Icari , Naval Facilities Enigneering Command Southwest Public Affairs Office

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (NNS) -- A ribbon cutting ceremony hosted March 28 by Col. Dwight Sones, 60th Air Mobility Wing commander, celebrated the completion of three years of construction of an airfield in Travis Air Force Base (AFB).

The newly constructed airfield will provide the Air Force with decades of training to pilots and air crews and will pay for itself in just a few years, said Sones.

Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded the $68 million contract to Baldi Brothers in 2008 for the construction of two separate runways in adjacent locations. One runway is approximately 10,995 feet by 150 feet. The second runway measures 4,100 feet by 90 feet and is an assault landing zone runway. This project allows C-17 Globemaster III crews to practice combat landings on site, saving taxpayers $7.3 million in annual fuel costs.

"In all, the combined efforts of Air Force's engineers and senior leaders working in partnership with the ROICC professional staff and contractor led to the completion of a very successful project for everyone - including taxpayers," said Lt. Joe Iacovone, ROICC team lead for this project.

The ribbon cutting ceremony included a C-17 crew's dramatic "touch and go" performance. NAVFAC Southwest Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC) at Travis AFB Cmdr. Chris Beaubien, U.S. Rep. John Garamendi, Baldi Brothers General Manager Mike Baldi, and Sones cut the ceremonial ribbon on the newly constructed runway as spectators and dignitaries observed.

The project replaced a runway constructed in 1946 for former Fairfield Army Air Base. About 54,000 cubic yards of concrete from the old runway was crushed on-site and reused as base for the two new runways.

Garamendi gave significant credit to both the Navy and Air Force for a job well done.

Travis AFB has a major impact on our local community as a number of military families and retirees have chosen to make Fairfield their permanent home. Travis AFB is the largest employer in the City and Solano County as well, and the massive Travis workforce has a local economic impact of more than $1 billion annually. The base also contributes a large number of highly skilled people to the local labor pool. David Grant Medical Center, a 265-bed, $200 million dollar facility, serves both in-service and retired military.

Good News! Our son has cleared the medical hold at THU in Great Lakes and ships out to South Carolina for Nuclear A school tomorrow.

Chuck P - thanks for your service.  I work for Yolo County Counsel and represent our sheriff's office.  I would bring my old dog up but she's thirteen and slowing down, and my knees wouldn't take it.

Well it has been a bit from my last post. We have been blessed to have the boy home twice in the last year, for Christmas and just a week ago. He is doing well in Norfolk. If you live in Northern California or Southern Oregon keep this in mind.

I'm a K9 handler for the Siskiyou County Sheriff Department. The K9 association is hosting a run in July. The event is the Iron Dog Challenge. this is a 1.5 mile run or walk with some 10 obstacles throughout the course. Hope to meet some of the dads there. Go to siskiyoucountycanine.com for more info and registration forms.

Good Luck and Godspeed to your son and the Nimitz, John!

Thanks Paul.  As I understand it, they are on the way to pick up the air wing, and then everything begins as you described.  I know he's ready and very focused

John, you'll discover the sailors differentiate check cruises (also called an "underway") from a deployment (also called a "cruise")....the underways last anything from 3-4 days to about 6 weeks and are preparation for the "cruise".....during that time there is a ton of training and quals everyone must go thru before the actual deployment starts....lot's of GQ (general quarters) and battle station drills and most importantly everyone must get qualified to fight fires....
