About the Arctic Gator...

Homeport: Naval Base San Diego, CA

USS Anchorage (LPD-23), the seventh San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Anchorage, Alaska and the first U.S. Navy ship to be commissioned in Alaska.

The San Antonio-class is the first class of ship equipped with a state-of-the-art fiber-optic Shipboard Wide Area Network (SWAN). Its design provides computer and network access linking every manned space on the ship, to include troop/crew berthing. The SWAN’s design also allows for future growth over the life of the ship as technology advances. Over 760 SWAN drops (i.e. access points) will support computer workstations or other uses throughout the ship.

Anchorage's keel was laid down on September 24, 2007 at the Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans, Louisiana, then owned by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. The ship was launched on February 12, 2011. She was christened two months later, May 14 - the first ship christened by Huntington Ingalls Industries since Northrop Grumman spun off its shipbuilding divisions as a separate company. The ship's sponsor is Annette Conway, wife of former Marine Corps Commandant General James T. Conway. The ship was formally delivered and accepted by the US Navy on September 17, 2012.

On November 21, 2012 the Pre-Commissioning Unit Anchorage (LPD 23) moored pierside for the first time at her homeport in San Diego during a homecoming ceremony.

The Anchorage was commissioned on May 4, 2013 in her namesake city ...

USS Anchorage Tour, Commissioning Details Announced..
By Chris Klint

Channel 2 News
5:21 PM AKDT, April 15, 2013
ANCHORAGE, Alaska

A new Navy ship named after Alaska’s largest city will visit it in about two weeks, offering scheduled public tours for three days before it is commissioned at the Port of Anchorage.

Lindsey Whitt, a spokesperson for Mayor Dan Sullivan’s office, says the USS Anchorage is expected to arrive at the port at about 8 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1. The San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship is meant to support landing operations, launching boats and hovercraft from a floodable aft well deck as well as helicopters from its upper helicopter deck.

While the Anchorage had been intended to spend nearly two weeks in its namesake city, budget cuts from federal sequestration have reduced the duration of its port call to four days.

Tours of the Anchorage will be offered from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 1, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 2 and from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 3. Because the port is a secured facility and civilians can’t drive onto it, buses will gather visitors at the parking lots of the Sears Mall in Midtown and the Northway Mall in East Anchorage.

In addition to suggesting that visitors wear sensible clothes and shoes, Whitt recommends that visitors refrain from bringing backpacks and large handbags, due to space constraints as well as security requirements before boarding the Anchorage.

“Visitors, both adults and children must be prepared to walk through a metal detector,” Whitt wrote in a list of tour guidelines. “Adults, over the age of 18, must provide government issued identification such as a driver’s license, passport or military credentials.”

Whitt also says the Anchorage, which has many ramps and ladders, isn’t handicapped-accessible. For those with mobility issues, a virtual tour of the ship will be posted on www.ussanchoragenavy.com at 8 a.m. May 1.

The Anchorage will be commissioned at 10 a.m. May 4, in an invitation-only event. Invitations to the commissioning are available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis by emailing names and addresses to ussanchoragetickets@gmail.com.

Anchorage Sailor Selected For All Navy Wrestling Team...
by USS Anchorage (LPD 23) (Notes) on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 6:23pm

From USS Anchorage (LPD23) Public Affairs

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A Sailor assigned to the future USS Anchorage (LPD 23) will be among five Sailors selected to compete in the ASICS U.S. Open National Wrestling Championships April 17-21 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Logistics Specialist Seaman Justin Nolen participated in the team’s open try-outs held in March and was notified of his selection earlier this month.

“It’s amazing to be selected because I get a chance to not only represent the command, but the entire Navy,” said Nolen, 20, who hails from Iverness, Florida. “This is a sport I’ve always competed in because of the strength and discipline required to be successful. I’ve always tried to embody those traits, especially as a Sailor and it will be an honor to represent the Navy in Las Vegas.”

Nolen will compete in the 51 Kilo (121 lbs) category and will need to finish in the top seven to qualify for an invitation to the U.S. World Team Trials in Stillwater, Ok. in June.

“He certainly has the drive to succeed,” said Logistics Specialist 1stClass Christopher Klock, Nolen’s division leading petty officer. “It’s great to see him push so hard because that ethic seeps into his work ethic and we get a great Sailor as a result. I wish him the best, and if he doesn’t make it, I know he’ll be up there again next year because that’s how dedicated he is.”

As a former Florida state high school wrestling champion in the 119 and 125-lbscategories, Nolen explained that competing on a national level never gets any easier.

“The nerves will always be there because everyone is just as good as you are if not better at that level,” he said. “The difference this time is it means something more to wear a shirt walking into the arena that says ‘Navy’ on it. I hope to represent us and Anchorage well.”
