Hey everyone.. just wanted to make a group for you all to ask sailors fresh out of boot camp any questions you have about your sailor. I promise one of us here in Pensacola will know the answer. Thanks for everything you all do as parents.

  • I already switched it from seamen pact to OS and my ship date was changed also (for school). My recruiter said he can’t change it anymore. My ASVAB scores were good enough for CTT and CTI but I have to take the DLAB over because I got a 70 even though I am pretty good at Spanish and Arabic. I know OS is a good job but I would like to use my foreign language skills.

  • Is it hard to switch your job in the navy? My job is OS right now but I would like to get into CTT or CTI or IS if available. (I leave for bootcamp in June)

  • TedIansdad The ratings you are asking about is the GSM and GSE ratings. These are ratings dealing with Gas Trubine Propulsion and Electrical Power generation. GSM, they will monitor, operate, and repair Gas turbine engines which have been set up for marine propulsion which drives the ship through the oceans. GSE, thye will monitor, operate and repair Gas turbine engines which are used to generate power to provide the ship with electrical power and also maintain the power distribution system.
  • I've got a question...My son says that his A School will be for an Engine Turbine Tech, but I don't find that anywere. I do find gas or electric turbine techs. Can anyone explain to me what these are?
  • Hi everyone, I must be out of touch with a lot of the new Navy rulesand regs. I was in the Navy for 26 years ending in 2003 and I'm realizing they have changed a few things. For one all the new things they do in boot camp I was really impressed with how they have streamlined everything and modernized, then theres all this talk of different phases in A-School I'm not sure I understand how this system works, when I went through AE school we could have our cars on base, we could also wear civilian clothes off base any time. If anyone could bring me up to speed on some of these things I'd appreciate it. My son Andrew is in BESS in Groton and getting info out of him is like trying to pull teeth. Thanks
  • Mari...I have been to see my son several times in Pensacola now. Actually, I just went to see him two weeks ago and stayed the weekend. He was able to spend the night with me in the hotel both Friday and Saturday nights. It wasn't right away that we were able to go see him though. He had to get to Phase III first...but once they are there, they get Liberty on Fridays (unless they have duty) and do not have to report back until Sunday night. I know when I have been there, there are quite a few staying at the hotel also. I think a lot of them go and stay at a hotel for the weekend just to get away from the barracks. I know our son said that when he got to Phase III, that's the first thing he did...went and stayed in the hotel just to get away from his room mates and the barracks. Anyway, hope this information helps!!! Take care...
  • Does anyone know once they are in A school in Pensicola, do they ever have full weekend liberty to come home for the weekend? Also, are they allowed to have the family come and visit them on the weekends. Any information would be appreciated.
  • Angie, glad to know you found him, and that he is intending to return. I do not think it's wise for him to delay even an hour returning to base. Some petty officer (with no authority over this matter) will have no bearing at his CO's mast. If it was his LPO, he might have an oppportunity to put in a good word for him, or not. We'll keep praying for the Lord to work in Travis and help him get focused on priorities. Blessings, Kevin
  • Well I guess I did jump gun. . .my son is very distraught now! I haven't said anything sooner because I thought our law enforcement system was better than they are! First off on 12-18-08 my son fell victim to fraud, a person online made him believe he was selling my son a car and made off with the money, my son has no car. I was able to talk him through the pain, frustration, and ill thoughts I thought, until today. . .he tried to secure another loan for a car local and he was turned down. Now I am very worried about him! I am so exhausted with researching this fraud, since the law isn't, and contacting every organization that is supposed to help. No help!! I am becoming distraught . . . I don't know where to turn, no one is doing their job :(. Wes is out money and no vehicle for the cold months to get around base for work and out in town to buy his groceries and other needs. I just don't know what to do :( :(.
  • Angie, sorry to hear about your sons troubles. I had a sailor go AWOL for almost 30 days and he went to CO's mast- got a severe chewing out, base restriction, and busted back one paygrade. Over 30 days and they can be considered deserters, so it's good that they got back sooner. Probably will cost them some money and time, hopefully won't aggravate prior troubles. May the Lord use this in their lives for good. Blessings, Kevin

What Next?

My son just graduated from A school in Pennsacola and has been in San Diego for three days now.  He says the living conditions are horrible and has not been assigned to his barracks yet.  He also says it is like living like a homeless person and his to use all his survival techniques.  Does not have a food galley like Pensacola and has to buy his food as well as find it.  Had to beg for a fork on yesterday to eat his ramen noodles.  Of course this made my heart saddend.  He stated that it will…

Aviation Electronics A-School Graduation ~ Info Needed if Possible

Hi!!! I am wondering if anyone has been to the graduation ceremony for A-School in Pensacola and would be willing to share any tips or information. I know most graduation ceremonies for A-School are very informal and low key, but apparently, my son's rate is the only one that has a formal graduation ceremony and I would like to be somewhat prepared before going. His Dad and I are planning on attending no matter what, but it would be easier if I knew where to go, where to park, how early to be…
