No More "Sailor in a Box" - From RTC- Posted 5 Sept 2019

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

We talk about Holiday Routine at Boot Camp - here's the skinny

Sunday/Holiday Routine allows recruits to attend religious services and observe Federal holidays. From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. recruits are able to: attend religious services, read and study, hygiene, perform uniform upkeep, write and read letters, or clean their rack and personal locker.

Important RTC/PIR Changes

RTC is making important changes to polices regarding PIR Guest Access as well as Bag Checks and Restriction Policies. Take the time to read thru these and be prepared when you head to Great Lakes for PIR.

Proud \Dad, hang in there! This is the toughest part. It gets a little easier as time goes by. Feel free to vent on here...we all did and still do.

one of the sticky-type lint rollers work really well and are really a fast way to clean up those blues.......

Silo's is in GL only 3 miles from base. We did not get to visit Chicago this trip but will go after A-School Graduation in Summer. However the food at Silo's was great.

We were told by a friend that has lived in Chicago her whole life that we should try Lou Malnati's for the best in Chicago style pizza. How does it compare to Silo's?

Remeber if you go to the mall ask every vendor for the military discount. they won't offer if you don't ask. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I feellike I know the area pretty well. The deep dish pizza at Silo's is excelent and they offer half price food to anyone in a uniform on the first Monday of every month. My son said he will be there every time.

While you are in GL for PIR one of the most important thing to bring your sailor. A lint brush! The scarf the Navy issues, sheds white fuzz and while you are with your sailor he will worry about messing up his uniforms. The whole town is full of RDC's and Officers that will make sure your sailor is mindful of his uniform in public. The lint brush is a big help and a shoe polish rag is also helpful. The Navy will let the Sailors wear a special kind of black ear muffs and they are hard to find but very much needed. We finally found them at the train station across from Gate 3 on the A-school side of the base. That is just passed the PIR grounds , go under the bridge and turn left at top of hill at the light. Train stop is acroos from gate 3 about 200 yards down. If your sailor is staying on for A-school in GL, the weather sucks there so a sun lamp for Your sailors study desk in his room really helps and can be purchased at walmart in Gurnee. They say that Cricket has the best cell service on the base and many sailors switch to it because it is cheap and dependable. If you are grad and go and staying in GL don't lose the parking pass you print for PIR as it will get you on base the whole weekend. The NEX on base has uniform upgrades that will be a welcome gift for your sailor.
Have fun while in GL and take another graduate with no family in town if you feel charitable. You won't regret doing it. The taxi ride to Gurnee Mills is $40 bucks each way and not many can afford that cost.
