How long ago did he arrive at RTC? It's been like 5 years but I seem to remember it took 2 or 3 weeks before we had reason to believe the SSBI was taking place. It actually worked out great for me because my sailor called me several extra times from Great Lakes, asking me questions about my background. No time for chit chat talking but it was great to see that number on my cell phone, and to hear her voice for a couple of minutes. Good luck to your son and I hope the SSBI process is normal and he gets to have the soonest possible PIR

Chris- you do understand that Ship 5 is for those being discharged from the Navy correct?

Dorm like...2 to four to a room depending on barracks and number of people. They just finished a brand new barracks a couple of years ago across from the chow hall. Supposed to be a lot like a hotel. Keep your car registration and insurance the way it is. Service people don't have to change it. He had his computer in his room. Much nicer than I had in the 60's. FYI, in Ft Gordon he had a 2 room suite, but as an E-4 he was allowed to move off base. Your signed on for 6 years I assume so he will also get E-4 when he grads from "A" school. Navy much kinder and gentler than it used to be...he'll be fine in Boot. Instructions are still the same...do what, where, and when your told to and be quiet until spoken to.

I was only allowed in the lobby, from what I remember she said it was like a small dorm room. This is years ago, but they weren't allowed to leave without a family member checking out with them, or 1 or 2 other sailors (again I forget if it was 1 or 2 other sailors). Not sure on the desk, she didn't bring any computers just her smart phone. She isn't much of a computer geek at all.

Yes, that is a bonus. We were barely home an hour after seeing him off from MEPS when we got the call.

What are their living spaces like at A school? Dorm like? Desk space? His computer has the potential to be quite the monstrosity.

Being in WI that should make it easier to attend PIR, you won't want to miss that day. One to remember for a long time! 4+ years later I dont' remember all the phone calls we got from boot camp but I can still picture the gates opening at PIR, and I have to admit some tears of joy at seeing them march in.

Thanks for all the info, Phil. I don't know what his address would be. He just stayed here with us in Wisconsin for a month before shipping. I doubt he'll ever live here. But I think I'm sorting it out just by bouncing it off of you. I think it safe to just get it all legal here in WI, in my name, and then sort out the title, etc. later.

Living in Virginia Beach we noticed that military people could keep their home state tags (my wife worked as a contractor on NAS Oceana).

Oh, i forgot to say what I know about vehicle registrations. Her car was in her name, and it was a-ok to keep the Massachusetts plates because our home was still her address. So if you can register it in your sons name it can stay registered in your local state since that will probably be his address? That was an old car she sold it before she left Pensacola. Then when she got to her base she bought a used car and registered that in California where her apartment is...

It's really encouraging to hear all of these success stories like that of your daughter, Phil. And thanks for the reply.

It was my plan to do that with the car, too -- drive it down with his stuff and then fly back. Here's my dilemma: The car in question is still in my name. The Virginia registration runs out at the end of this month, as well as the insurance (the VA inspection is good for another year). I'm now in Wisconsin and have a few weeks left, by their laws, to get things switched. Maybe I should just get it all straight here in my name and then sort it out later?

I don't know if this makes a difference on anything residency-wise, but we still own our home in Virginia Beach, and are proud to have (and chose) a Navy Family as tenants.
