I suggest we pray for understanding and unity.  That our elected officials remember that they are not in battle with one another, but in debate.  Argument and disagreement are part of the process; hatred and threat must never be.  I pray particularly that the voices in the popular media realize this as well.  Calls for disunity and destruction of our nation, accusation that our Sailors and Troops are wrong in their efforts to project, not just U.S. might, but the heart of U.S. power must stop.  I further pray that members of our Navy who spread dissension among their shipmates, encouraging disobedience and intolerance be shown the light of the Cardinal Virtues as well as patriotism. Not by their or our will, but that of heaven.

George S. Patton on Prayer:

The following is an excerpt from Training Letter No. 5, authored by James O'Neill, Chaplain of the Third Army in 1944. While Chaplain O'Neill issued the Training Letter, he did so at the request of General Patton, and reported that he gleaned much of the letter's content from a conversation with the General.

"Those who pray do more for the world than those who fight; and if the world goes form bad to worse, it is because there are more battles than prayers. 'Hands lifted up,' said Bossuet, 'smash more battalions than hands that strike.' Gideon of Bible fame was least in his father's house. He came from Israel's smallest tribe. But he was a mighty man of valor. His strength lay not in his military might, but in his recognition of God's proper claims upon his life."

Hope you find this encouraging.

We ask for Your strength for the families those killed today in this senseless act of violence and that Your guidance help these grieving families heal.  We also ask that Your merciful gaze be directed toward healing those injured and that Congresswoman Giffords be allowed to continue her fight for the people of Arizona.

Prayers for my son's wife, Angela Eckel. She is due to deliver their third child the first week in January. My son is currently deployed and won't be able to be with her. She really has her hands full. Many thanks!!
