Prayer is sitting in the silence until it silences us, choosing gratitude until we are grateful, praising God until we ourselves are a constant act of praise.

Radical Grace: Daily Meditations
Post from Nick's dad, Steve.....Tough day today for the parents. Nothing bad happened, but it did not feel like there was much improvement either. Nick has been frustrated, and at times confused the last few days. I believe his mood is from the medication he is on, the emotional frustration of being stuck in the hospital bed (because he is still pretty sick), and some yet unknown problems resulting from his brain surgery. Because now that he is getting better (even though he can't see it) Sheila and I are going to start reading some of the wonderfully inspirational cards and letters that have been sent to him so that he can get a sense of the love and confidence that all of us have that he will beat get well and he enjoy a wonderful and exciting life. Please join us in a prayer that the Holy Spirit guide our words to inspire Nick to keep up the good fight. (Steve)
Morning all, I just spent the last 3:41:22 on a video chat with my sailor! Life is good
she had an advancement board today, ( we knew nothing about) at 1:17 this morning I woke up sick to my stomache and raced to the bathroom, I was awake and sick until 2:38, I crawled back into bed.......sailor called and said she passed her board in a little over an hour! She "Killed" it, no look-ups, the officers stood and applauded! she said it was amazing, they said it was the best and quickest in years! as we talked I said something about being sick last night and she asked what time? when I'd told her she said Yep, nerves for me. LOL we didnt' enven know she was going before the board leave alone what day or time. But she has more chest candy to show off, gotta love it.
.....Another day of progress. Nick was off of the vent most of today. His lungs are getting stronger. He sat in the wheelchair for a couple hours. He is really getting tired of the non-clotting med that he has to get twice per day. It has to be administered by a needle and it must really sting. It makes him mad every time. No surgery today. Next surgery will be most likely on Friday. (Steve)
Amen!
and I echo your thanks and Praise.
I am praising God for a year, that while difficult at times, has encouraged and strengthened my faith beyond what I thought possible. I have seen His Mighty Hand move on so many's behalf. I am praising God for healing my son, for being with Tom and his family, with Nick, Steve and Sheila as they continue their journey, and I thank Him for all of you and the gift of encouragement that you have all been kind enough to share with me and my family.
It's my prayer that over this next year, God will bring even more of our Sailors home, safe and sound, that He will continue to renew His mercies every morning for all of us and for our great Nation, and that He will strengthen our families, and the men and women who make the daily sacrifice to ensure the freedom to worship Him.
Have a blessed New Year everyone.
Help Us Remember
As followers of Christ, we should never judge and we should never be quick to anger. Read this below as a reminder and give someone a big smile today instead :)
Help us to remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day, that she is rushing home to cook dinner and help with homework, to do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.
Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who takes forever at the checkout stand, is a worried 19-year-old college student, who is balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.
Remind us that the scary looking bum, begging for money
in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!)
is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.
Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow
through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.
Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive.
Let us show patience, empathy and love.
Open our hearts not to just those who are close to us,
but to all humanity.
Remind us each day that of all the gifts you give us,
the greatest gift is love.
update time
• Post from Nick's mom, Sheila....Today ended up being a pretty busy day for Nick. He was in his wheelchair this morning, and then this afternoon they experimented with a trache collar and speaking valve. Nick got to hear himself for the first time in 45 days. His first words were a squeaky "Awesome" and then followed by "Can I sleep now?". For anyone who knows Nick, this is nothing out of the ordinary! They didn't leave the new trache on for too long because he's still trying to build up his endurance to come off of the ventilator, but I think he was so glad to hear his voice (and so were we).
a great video and some awesome pictures

There are many things to be grateful "for" but, as I ripen with the seasons of life, the many reasons blend into a sacred mystery. And, most deeply, I realize that living gratefully is its own blessing.

sorry, here's the update
Post from Nick's dad, Steve......We had a very nice Christmas here at Walter Reed yesterday. Our family was together, celebrated Christmas mass in the Chapel, and got to share in a wonderful banquet put on by the hospital. Nick had a fairly restful day. He still had to have his meds administered and be "turned" every couple hours (which is something that he does not like). His pain medication levels leave him sleepy most of the time these days. He is currently in the operating room for wound care (cleaning, dressing changes, etc.). He is spending time "off of the vent" intermittently to strengthen his lungs. When off of the vent he works harder to breath which worries him sometimes. Sheila & I are there to reassure him that things are OK which usually brings him comfort. Once Nick's breathing strength is better several good things will happen for him: He will be able to eat and drink, once he passes the swallow test. He can go to a regular hospital room. He can use a talking valve in his trake and talk. So please include prayers for continued improvement in Nick's breathing through this week. Once again, thanks to everyone for your prayers and encouraging words. (Steve)

Our son is going camping this weekend for Christmas! So glad that he is feeling well enough to go. PT is going great and he is just about off of his crutches...just 8 days out from his surgery!
Praying that you all have a wonderful Christmas and a blessed and very safe New Year!
