Location of PIR (Pass in Review)
Hi all,
I am retired USAF and attending my son's PIR on May 4, 2012. I will be staying at the Navy Gateway Inns and Suites (NGIS) which is on base on MacDonough Dr. I have a DOD sticker on my truck and valid retired military ID so I should have no problem getting on base.
I need to know if I am staying close to the drill hall where the PIR takes place? Where on base is the drill hall located? If anyone has stayed at NGIS how early did you leave to arrive at the PIR location.
Thanks for any information,
Steve

First, thank you for your service. You must be very proud to have a son carrying on your family tradition.
I just returned from seeing PIR on 4/13. My son stayed on base for A school, and I think his barracks is near the road the hotel is on. The drill hall is on one section of the base, and the hotel is on the main section. You use two different gates for each. You could probably walk from the hotel, but I don't recommend it. It would be about 45 minutes one way. When my son was on liberty during the weekend, he had to walk out to the main gate to meet us, that was about 20 minutes. It would be another 20 minutes from there. In addition, security might get weird with you walking every where. I have created a Google map with some place markers for you to get oriented. Here is the link to my map. http://g.co/maps/umj8p
In short, I suggest you drive from the hotel to PIR, just like everyone else. Driving was a snap if you get in line before the gate opens. Let me know if you have further questions. - Todd
Todd,
Thank you so much for the Google Map. That really helps. I really do appreciate the time you took to tag the map. Hopefully others can see the map and locations and also be helped. Yes, it would be too far for me to walk as I am also a Disabled Vet and can't walk very far.
I am so proud of my son. He is in Division 811 and is going to train as a NAVY Diver. I couldn't talk him into being a USAF Load Toad, (Bomb and Missile Loader) on fighter/bomber aircraft, like his old man...I think he made the right choice!!!
@Jim...thanks for the advice. I will most certainly download the pass to be double sure of getting in. I am driving up from Florida and don't need any problems once I get there. And Jim thanks so much for this site. You do a good and needed service to those of us with young men and women going into the NAVY.
It was my HONOR to serve our great country for 25 years. I would do it again in a heart beat.
Thanks--Steve
Todd,
I don't know if you saw that I had replied back to you on Saturday...so here it is again. Thanks for helping me out.
