I have a son that is currently in A scholl in great lakes also to become an ET. Trevor had a 3 day week before the holidays and had 2 weeks off for leave (12/19/08-01/03/09) he returns back to school at 0430. He moved his wife and baby up with him as soon as he could after basic and got his live ashore paperwork done. It was great to see them during his leave but hated to see them go back.
I am curious to see if our sons know each other or have the same class. when did your son start his A-school? This has been a long journey for my son but one that I am glad that he pushed us to let him partake in, it has done him good and has made him grow up even more than he already was.
I am glad to see that someone else on here had the same idea that I had just didn't know how to go about starting a group about my sons field. hope to hear from you soon. Tim

My son is currently attending A school at Great Lakes CSCS (Center for Surface Combat Systems) where he is working towards his contract to become an ET (Electronic Technician). I thought it would be a good idea to have a group for this rating and hopefully we can capture a couple of experienced ETs to help us out with questions and suggestions and to help monitor this group so we can have a better understanding of what our sailors are doing. Also because both ETs and FCs take the same basic education courses to a beginning degree we can enjoin to a shared effort here. However, perhaps if there is enough interest in the FCs someone else might start another group that would be more directed to the FCs.
While I am experienced in electronics and computer related fields I only know what I have read on sites such as Navy.mil, all.about.military.com, etc about what happens in A school and the fleet. I have found these types of sites to be either flat wrong, out dated, or written in such poor grammar and logic as to be confusing to say the least. My other source is what I have seen others say on forum such as this.
What I do know is that the theme of A schools seems to change over time but the basic AC and DC theory will still need to be taught so there will be a common thread through which ever generation of A school sailors pass through.
To the best of my research presently new sailors reporting to AECF school at CSCS will get one week (40 hours) of INDOC (Indoctrination), two weeks (80 hours) of SCC (Surface Common Core) and then on to ATT (Apprentice Technical Training) which is where the core basic’s are learned.
Here we can chat about A school, C school or the fleet as it relates to AECF ETs.
