@Craig... had read that story before and not fully understood the implications, but having checked out the information that you gave me will have my Depper look into and see what she can do to get ahead... not sure how much MA stuff that they have there, but will look... I may have forgotten to mention that she is going in for MA... additional question that I saw somewhere else, how much advancement is there possible with MWD training in MA... only asking for me, as my sailor will make decision when the time comes.... we get them to the door, they use their feet to get them through it.
Much like you as a Dad, you're here on NavyDads.com to learn, I run a website that deals only with Deppers (those in the Navy DEP program waiting to transfer to boot camp). I give the knowledge to the Deppers so they are fully aware of what is happening at boot camp and what to expect. My joy is getting these future sailor ready for boot camp, and to show them how to avoid all the problems. It's fun seeing these future sailors pump each other up about going. They aren't scared that's for sure....
Craig...Thanks for the info. My son Zack is a 22 yer old college graduate, so his wait is not due to age or high school graduation considerations.
BTW...what do you mean when you say you "have deppers"?
Steve - Waiting till June is normal. I have deppers right now with ship dates till October 2012. There has to be a school seat for them to be able to leave.
Secondly, the Navy recently changed their rule. You must be 18 by the end of boot camp. It use to be that you could be 17. But those days are gone.
V.Mike - I want you to read this story written by the Navy. It show how a depper gets a head start for advancement while in DEP. Its a simple online course that will make them easily stand out and will show to the Navy they are "hot runners".

I am an expert with the Navy stuff. I also have an endless supply of resources. I have asked countless amount of recruiters how these deppers can take this ATT course, and yet know one knew how. Just to get a wide range of recruiters involved throughout the U.S., I posted that I wanted the deppers to ask their recruiters how to do it. I made my post over 8 months ago for deppers to figure out how to get into the Navy Knowledge Online (NKO). Finally yesterday, (over 8 months later) a depper figured it out. She solved the puzzle.
So, if your depper is smart, they need to get into NKO and take the "ATT" classes as recommended in the Navy Link above. This is something that isn't ever done by deppers, and beleive me, they will make themselves known to the Navy. They will always be considered "ahead"....
Take a look at how this depper was able to get in, and the written procedure she wrote so your sailor can do the same...

To Craig... went to the NavyDEP.com website and was helpful for both me and my future sailor to have accurate information to prepare for what is ahead... At the same time we know as parents that there is some of it they will take to heart and study for now, and some that they will have to learn the hard way and get that knock on the head... Did tell her about the moment of truth thing as well as the visits to the chaplain thing - funnier than heck.
Steve... My Daughter is also in the DEP program and she has been signed up since September of this year... If Zack has not graduated from High School they require them to have their high school diploma before they can leave for Boot Camp or do anything else associated with entry into the Military... seems kinda cruel to make them wait [My Lyndsay counts down the days] but at the same time all of the things that revolve around the graduation and leaving the family are taken care of before they have to leave you for 3 to 4 months for Boot Camp and A-school... if you throw in whatever C-school they choose to go to could be another 3 to 4 weeks... hang in there and read as much as you can, has worked for me.
My son Zack enlisted in October. His active duty date, boot camp and entry to the nuclear program has been delayed until June 2012. Is a delay of this length common?
Scout - I run a deppers website and I am very good with dealing with this type of stuff. My suggestion is to say to him that you found out exactly what the recruits do everyday at boot camp, then give him this link.

I have sooo many deppers tell me the same exact thing, that they wished they would have spent more time with their families or GF prior to leaving.
Remember, you are here on NavyDad's for support, the mom's have N4M for support, and the Deppers also have a support website. So just plant the seed in his head and hopefully we will change his mind in 5 days. If he comes over, I will make dang sure he does... Remember, they might have scored really high on their ASVAB, but these future sailors are young and stupid about life's choices. Just plant the seed.
My son leaves for Great Lakes on Tuesday, the 22nd. My wife and I are about to leave to help him pack up his apartment. What's frustrating is that he doesn't want us to attend the swearing in ceremony or see him off at the airport. He just wants us to drop him off at the recruiters. He doesn't understand that we want to spend as much time with him as possible. But, I get that he wants to focus on the job at hand. We are just going to miss him, especially during the holidays.
