I just got a chance to hear from my son Mike, he called and said he was doing well and very excited to be getting ready for an "All Hands on Deck" exercise and becoming a US Navy sailor! then PIR on Friday. He mentioned 2 weeks ago he may get a chance to play volleyball. I had to pull it out of him because he is deflecting any personal achievements especially in a team sport;however he did say his div 338 team won the championship & beat the special opps team in volleyball. He also told me a little about the tear gas exercise. I was lauging as he talked about coughing and tearing up. I know its a serious exercise but he tells a great story. The US Navy is the best thing that could have happened to him. I am proud and excited for him and his career choice.

We got a call from our SR John today. Ship 3 Div 370- It was sure good to hear his voice. Seems to be doing well. He said he is the Master at Arms "currently". Sounds like fun. He gets to yell but said yelling at bootcamp is the norm so it does not seem odd. He said about 15 recruits have had wisdom teeth removed so far and he should next week. They are on day 2-5 as of today. They had their first academic test this week. He thought the swim test was very easy. He said they eat well in the galley. The attention to detail is the thing right now. Even a speck of dust warrants a "hit" on inspections.
We also got the 2nd letter from him today. My wife writes John daily so he said it nice to get letters. He said it is sad some recruits have not received a letter. I send the NFL and college scores to him each week which he enjoys and said others like it also to get caught up on their favorite team.

My daughter graduated from Boot Camp on 28 Sep 12. It was a great experience for me and my wife, she is now in Pensacola ready to start A school. Wow!! the Navy threw a great ceremony, I was very impressed and proud to be a Navy Dad.
Can't wait to find out where my daughter is heading after A school.
Proud Dad!
Just got word that my son is assigned to ship 11/division 006 with PIR on 11-16-12.
He's been there 11 days so I expect things to start getting a bit tougher.
Our son A J is probably one of the newest Aviation Ordinance men serving aboard the USS George Washington. We are proud of our son but we are also proud of his shipmates and all the parents who can overcome their concerns and support and sustain them. In the same way that our sons and daughters support, strengthen, and sustain their ships, commands, and strike groups we can assist, empathize, and collaborate here at home to fortify one another as parents and patriots. May God bless us all.
Received my first phone call from my son grgory yesterday (9/27). it was
great to hear from him. sounded good (confidant). my son is assigned to
ship 09 division 355. i read all the posts about PIR and i can't wait to be
there on 2, Nov, 2012. Greg will be the next set of footprints in a long
family line of US Navy Sailors. Congratulations to all the new Sailors..
Just wanted to say thank you to Navy Dads for this site, It's helped me through this tough week, with some great perspective and information. We have four boys and Skyler is our first to leave, It's been tough for all of us. We know he will do well he"s been preparing for the last 2 years, workin hard. anyway just wanted to let you know Thanks, Don
my son just recently went to navy bootcamp on 9/5/12 this is what he wanted to do for several years. he is 18 just graduated was very excited at his good luck party he was telling people he was not scared or nervous he was excited. on sept 21 i got a phone call saying asking for me to not be upset but they were poss. oing to discharge him because he was depressed having a hard time sleeping and eating. In his letter we got the day before he had said things were not that bad. I waited and waited to find out what was going on. Today I finnally called admid. and they were told me he was in holding. what is holding? I do not believe he is depressed i believe he was that second week tired and a little flusterd. He told me that they had told him even if he leaves he can always rejoin in a couple of yrs if he wants how ever thats not what I have read. I believe that if he knew that it was slim of rejoining he would not leave and would give it his all. Any advise appriciated Im confused as what holding? Does he or does he not get phone call?
My son has been stationed in New Orleans for the last three months or so. Even though he dislikes the extreme humidity, he's grown accustomed to LPD 23's pre-commissioning weather and has taken every chance to learn and inhale everything about his duties and the Navy in general.
He is eager to hopefully get a ten day leave approved some time around Thanksgiving weekend. But obviously there are no guarantees. I know he really misses my brined turkey...
To date he's proud to have gotten his "Plankowner" ball cap, Globar War on Terrorism, Rifle Marksmanship and Pistol Sharpshooter ribbons.
He misses the family and we miss him too... Love You and hope to see you soon son!
"It's been about one year since I've enlisted in the United States Navy. Many things have changed in such a short time! Although, it is a good change. I'm happy with where I am at, and I cannot wait to continue on the path I'm on. Thank you all, friends and family, for giving me your support in adjusting to this new lifestyle. God Bless you all! Keep in touch, I'll reply when I can."
It's honestly been like mourning someone's death..... I was in the Marines for 6 years so I know there are pluses... but still.
I received a letter from my son, he is in boot camp now and will graduate Oct. 6. He mentioned in his letter that he was qualified with the M-9, but forgot to explain exactly what that was. Can any one tell me what that means.
My Son Nick just deployed three days ago and I was wondering if anyone out there has loved ones that are on the same ship or even in that group? I find it to be very stressful now that both of my two oldest sons are now deployed serving our great nation! I couldn't be more proud of them then I am now! Please post on this blog if you have someone serving on the same ship and maybe we can actually get a group formed. It really helps talking to other people who are going through the same stress and worries while our love ones our serving overseas to grant us our freedoms that we enjoy and make this nation the great nation that it is!
greetings...any dads out there with a sailor on ship 9, div 355 at RTC? also, is there
anyone going to EN "A" School? What does an EN do, i've read the job description, but
does anyone out there have any experience in this Rate. thanks
greg finley
Well- we received the Box from RTC today with our son's belongings. Backpack, shorts, t-shirt. We discovered in the pocket of his shorts his Driver License. Do you think this was a mistake on his part? Or would they have told him to send it home? I would think he needs it. He took a wallet, cash, Social Security Card and Driver license. If he needs it back we will wait till we get his address and mail it back.
Any Thoughts?

Talked to my son and he stated He hopes he gets on a smaller ship not an aircraft carrier. I ask is it better to be on a small ship where he will have more jobs to do than a large one. He is going to be a MM.
