A light doesn't need to say it is a light

it either shines or it doesn't, when it starts blinking it becomes annoying and is replaced.. that is the essence of a SEAL. He does what he is supposed to do and lets others enjoy the benefits of his mission... He does not seek glory, his reward is a mission accomplished and the knowledge that he was there when required

BUDS class 290

These men, my son among them, are being subjected to the most intense scrutiny of the year due to the soft approach of previous classses. I say Soft even though BUDS soft is pretty brutal. Either way the ones that get through are very special and the ones that try and don't make it have nothing to be ashamed of.... Prayers for all of them, I am in awe of their commitment but not surprised that America still produces such men,,,,

I haven't seen much about this group. I hope they are pulling together and are on track for a August 26 graduation!

My wife has sent our son a letter that she expected some sort of notification from the Recruit Training Center if his hands were broken since she hasn't received a letter from him yet.

My story

Well, here’s my story:

Bobby has always been interested in the military, as most boys are. I found it easier to connect with Bobby while he was growing up. His twin sister was all girl. I did my best, yet, It was sure easier to throw ball than play Barbie’s. My now ex-wife did most of the discipline while they were growing up while I found it easier to be their friends and have fun with them. About six years ago we got divorced and she moved close and we split the kids a week here, then a week there. That worked for a couple of years then they moved in with me full time. Back in May of 2010, his junior year at High School, Bobby said he wanted to Join the Military. Knowing nothing about the process we thought it best to visit each of the branches recruiters. Well, the first place we were able to see was the Air Force. So Bobby and I talked to him for awhile. Bobby was excited and wanted to join up right then. They had a special deal for Juniors and I agreed to let him join. Being a minor we needed moms signature as well. Bobby then took the ASVAB test and the physical at the San Diego MEPS. Several weeks later Bobby figured out that the jobs that the Air Force had were not what he wanted to do. His recruiter suggested that he check with the Navy. So, after several months of switching over and waiting for the right job to open up in the Navy he went back down to MEPS and got his HM Hospital Corpsman. The last three months he has been going to the recruiters once a week to do Navy stuff. He goes to Boot in September 21, 2011. I’m so glad that Bobby got a job that he wanted. Bobby has always been a bit lazy. He lacks a passion to succeed. I have to kick him in the butt for him to do things. I’m hoping that the Navy will bring out the best in him.

His sister, Andrea received a call about six weeks ago from an Army recruiter. He was able to convince her that the Army would train her in what she wants to do. So, getting her signed up before she finished High School was a challenge. She will go off to Basic in January 2012.

Now I feel the need to find out more about the world that they are getting into. Which brought me to this site.

Well, there ya have it. My story.

-Bob

Thanks to All Hands

Just want to thank everyone for the support to me, my son, Michael, and to all of our men and women in our armed services.

As a point of introduction, I am the son of a Naval officer who saw Pearl Harbor from aboard the USS Helena (CL50) on Dec. 7th, then progressed through the War on troop transports and freighters (kinda like Mr Roberts). He saw action from the bridge at Iwo, Leyte, Okinawa and with the invasion fleet at Japan. I joined the ranks in 1948 with him as a baby sailor and served with him for about eleven years, through the Korean conflict as he ran ammunition and mash units to the front.  In '54 -'56 we spent time together in the Philippine Islands at Sangley Point Naval Air Station. (The best years of my life.) When he retired from active service in 1959 I set my sights on following my Dad into the service after high school and even took two years of cadet training in high school. But the good Lord must have figured Dad had done enough for the country for all of us because I drew a 4F from the service center and the other two boys pulled college deferments and out lived the draft. So I put my disappointment aside and went to college. But the salt water has always been in my blood and the Navy has always been my home.

When my son, Michael, decided to serve in the Navy after high school I can honestly say it was one of the proudest and most heart filling days of my life. Dad has been living vicariously the sailors life through his exploits ever since then. Now I have the opportunity to take the Tiger Cruise aboard his ship CVN 65 USS Enterprise and I will finally get the opportunity to spend some time aboard a 'ship of the line' at sea.

It'll be a time of emotion for me as I remember my Dad and his desire to sail aboard a 'ship of the line' after Pearl and, for me, since the Enterprise was the ship I was hoping to serve aboard back in '66. Michael keeps reminding me that she's the oldest ship in the fleet. I guess she's just waiting for me to come aboard and ride with her one last time. God willing, I'll llive the childhood dream.

My wife and I have recieved information from our son and his day-to-day routine and life at Great Lakes, however, we're trying to make flight reservations to be at his PIR and, if possible, spend a couple of days with him, if he's not grad and go. Can anyone fill me in on how much time before recruits PIR they know if they are grad and go or will have a couple of days of day leave since it's July 4th, weekend.

Battle of Midway

I just watched the battle of midway video post on this site.I got a lump in my throat watching it as my dad was in the army during world war two and can appreciate the story.I now find my son in Japan on a two year assignment and wonder how different the world would be if the outcome of that war was different.I am glad that Japan and Germany are now our allies and that the past while remembered can be forgiven.
